Atelier M's latest brunch concept transports you back to the roaring 1920's. The extreme wealth & decadence displayed in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby novel is alive and jive-kicking at the newest brunch to hit the Dubai Marina, Feathers 7 Pearls.
THE FOOD
Chef, Owner and the "M" in Atelier M, Mohammad Islam garners his main inspiration from Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian influence, and that is exactly what you are treated to during the brunch.
Bite sized starters arrived with a cucumber & avocado gazpacho, fine de claire oysters, wild mushroom takoyaki that burst with with mushroomy flavour, and burrata with herb crostini and a selection of cold cuts, cheese & fresh figs.
The main courses were portioned perfectly for two to share, and gave just enough of a sample of the high quality food from the menu without the feeling of bloatedness . Its not often that the side dishes deserve to be mentioned ahead of the main dishes, however when the al dente green beans, the creamy mashed potato and vegetable fried rice are this good, you know you are in for a treat when it comes to the "stars" of the show. The marinated prawns & mussels with vegetables in an Asian oyster sauce, the grilled black angus rib eye sliced on the diagonal and served with a jus and side salad and a glutinous truffle porcini risotto, finished in 36 months aged parmesan wheel with lashings of shaved parmesan. Unfortunately the homemade chicken wellington on the menu wasn't available on our visit but we look forward to trying that on our next visit.
If we were huge lovers of dessert, we would have found the small dessert table slightly underwhelming. It featured a few small cakes, macaroons and a perfunctory chocolate fountain with fruit skewers. Luckily we are not so we didn't mind in the slightest.
THE DRINK
The regular house spirits (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey) are complemented by house wines and bottled beer (Bud). An added level of prohibition pizazz is added with the addition of a cocktail trolley where you can take your pick from either a freshly shaken bloody mary, margarita or aperol spritz. The waiters looked the part in their braces and were swift with their service, even bringing the trolley around to each table in the final hour of brunch for additional brownie points. One thing that the brunch was missing, which would have added that additional level of authenticity would be the addition of cocktails such as the gin rickey, the side car, an old fashioned, or our favourite espresso martini (which they do happen to serve at the brunch afterparty upstairs.)
OVERALL
One thing the restaurant cannot be accused of is going at the theme of feathers & pearls half-heartedly. A red carpet, bright natural light with exquisite floor to ceiling views of the marina and it's glut of super-yachts, mirrored chandeliers, fedora hats, braces and charleston feather headbands for the staff all add to the aura. The men especially exude a Gatsby'esq swagger akin to the likes of Fred Astaire, Cary Grant or Gary Cooper.
Live entertainment is provided by the 3-piece band who also get right into the 1920's spirit, in terms of the way that they dressed and the songs that they performed. The drummer and the guitarist are particularly fun to watch and we couldn't take our eyes off the pair every time they performed.
