Dusty's Airplane Themed Brunch - DIFC

From the depths of seemingly nowhere, Dusty's has risen prodigiously to become one of the coolest hangouts in DIFC! The unashamed new kid on the block, "Dusty's" has been shaped as an extension of "Dusty" himself, who rather than the archetypal faceless owner, can often be seen living his vision and enjoying himself with his extended Dusty's family at the bar.

With Dubai serving as one of the worlds busiest aviation hubs, and with a standing army of tens of thousands of crew, it seemed only a matter of time before a brunch was dedicated to the industry that has provided the region with so many of its riches over the years. (roughly 28% of Dubai's GDP for those who were wondering!)
So…enough with the statistics, fasten your seat belts and prepare for take off on a frivolous culinary tour of Dubai's first Airways themed brunch.

THE FOOD & DRINK

We began by passing through the security scanners and were greeted by a smiling stewardess and female captain who were dishing out either blue (Business Class) or red (First Class) wristbands, depending on the type of drinks package guests would like. (unfortunately no reclining seats are to be found)

We found ourselves on a very full flight and having waited around 15 minutes after being seated, we eventually had to use our call button to summon our captain/waiter across to our table. He explained that this was the busiest they had every been (a good sign) and that anything and everything from the a la carte menu was available to order…as much and as many times as we would like.

The menu itself is a culinary depiction of Dusty's travels across the globe, and the ability to chose anything from the menu left us feeling rather privileged. We started with large whole pieces of chicken breast which had been skewered and chargrilled to perfection and presented on a hot black slate, along with three of the most tender Wagyu sliders we had ever tasted, served in brioche buns and accompanied by a sweet tomato relish that instantly dispelled any lingering grumbles we may have had over the slow start. Well played!

One of the benefits of coming with such a large group was the ability to order almost everything from the menu and sample bits and bobs from our friend's plates. Some of the things we managed to sample throughout the day were the Beef Carpaccio Crostini with garlic aioli & lemon dressing, the large bountiful pieces of Lobster served inside a taco, the Seabass Ceviche, the Apsparagus Risotto with Mascarpone, The Black Cod, and the Fillet Steak with homemade béarnaise and Truffle Fries served with Parmesan.

Dusty's brunch aims to be a true gastronomic experience for all of its guests, and for a venue so small, you will be surprised to find that the kitchen more than adequately manages with such a wide variety of food being thrust out in such a short space of time, without letting their standards drop. Everything we ordered was fresh, hot, and full of flavour albeit not the largest of portions.

The Desserts seemed to fall by the wayside as we neared the end of our flight, and our attentions turned to a more liquid based finale as the DJ had by now whipped the crowd into a frenzy and the atmosphere was very lively. Special mention though must go to the "Candy Station," which arrives at your table under a shower of sparklers and the team of faux-cabin crew, giving you that sense of showiness that usually goes along with ordering a very expensive bottle of fizz at one of the city's nightspots (or so we have been told!) The dessert platter features smorgasbord of bitesize treats including waffle croutons, cake pops, macaroons, jellied candies, strawberries, marshmallows and a mini chocolate fondue to dip them all in…

In terms of the beverage selection, our waiter/pilot understood the main aims of our rather large and rowdy group instantly, and the selection of Wines, Spirits and Sparkling Wine for those in first class were constantly flowing. We did however find the selection of "Hobgoblin" beer as quite strange…certainly for non beer drinkers a number of our group (including the men) found this beer to be quite bitter and quickly switched to an alternative beverage after their first one. Perhaps a less intimidating, more mellow hop such as a Heineken, Corona or Becks would be better suited for our next flight!

THE OTHER STUFF

Taking yourself too seriously is a term we have levelled at many a venue in Dubai and in DIFC in particular. This is why it is so refreshing to see that the "crew" at Dusty's have taken their approach seriously enough in terms of their Food, Beverage and Musical offerings which are a match for most in the city, yet have packaged it all together in a way that allows them to constantly poke fun at themselves, and as a result, ensure that all guests are having as great a time as they seem to be having too.

We had read that there were also to be some board games which would make their way around to us during the brunch, giving us the opportunity to Roll the Dice and win prizes such as 50% off our next brunch, and free beverages. We must keep a closer eye out next time as we seem to have missed these!

A final special mention must go to DJ Phil James, who takes guests on a musical marathon through the deepest depths of soul, rnb, reggae, hip hop and ofcourse everything in between. Music plays such an important part of any brunch experience, and his track selection along with his mixing ability allow him to control the mood of the audience without being too intrusive…the perfect accompaniment and the skill of a true Muso.
