Something was different about our latest trip to Flavours on Two at the famous Towers Rotana. A serenity and sense of warmth surrounded our welcome. The low lighting, traditional lanterns and scattered boxes of dates set atop lavish table dressings could only mean one thing…but surely Ramadan did not fall for another 10 days? We were in fact transported a week into the future at their Iftar Preview, to give all of you lucky diners a mini taste of what is instore for the upcoming Holy Month…

The Food and Drink

With Dates being the customary first food to break the fast with, they feature prominently as soon as you enter the main buffet section next to the traditional juices which include Water, Karkadeh Tameer Hindi, Amar al Din and Fresh Orange Juice.

There are also a wide variety of Arabic, and international dishes on display, ranging from Samak Mashawi, an impressive looking whole Lamb Ouzzi and Frikki, a Mixed Grill live cooking station featuring Shish Tawok Skewers, Lamb Kofta and freshly wrapped Shwarmas. Dajaj bil Batata, a traditional Lebanese dish of baked Garlic Chicken and Potatoes with a loud yet balanced garlicy flavor, Lubya Bil Lahem, which is a green Bean Stew, Laban Umou which is Meat with Youghurt, Hot Mezzeh, Grilled Chicken, Tajen Shrimps and Beef Gholash complete a selection of the assortment of dishes on the "hot" side of the buffet.

On the "cold" side of the buffet, the ever-vast selection of Salads remains from the weekday theme nights, albeit with more of an Arabian inclination in its flavorings, including Kishkeh, Fattoush, Moutable, Hoummous, Mixed Quinoa, Tabouleh, and Vine Leaves to name but a few. There is also an ornate looking "Date Pyramid" with a cresent moon at its peak forming the centre-piece of the Dessert section. Again, this features a healthy mix of tradtional iftar desserts such as Baklawa, Moukalabieh, Awwamat, Kunafeh (a buttery, syrup-sweetened kadaifi noodle pastry filled with cheese) Maaumul Tameer, Halva and Sesame and Cardomon Cookies along with more international dessert stalwarts such as Individual Cheesecakes, Chocolate Mousse, Fruit Salad and Fresh Rasperry Moussecakes.

As Dessert is tradionally the most important part of an iftar meal, we forewent our usual tendancies to end the meal with Cheese, although a healthy selection was available, including Baladi, Gruyere, Akawi, Blue Cheese and Fontina amongst others.

Overall

As an experience, albeit a week or two early, to enjoy the Iftar experience with its sence of generosity, traditional customs, decoration and food that we perhaps only get to enjoy at this time of year brought about a special feeling of closeness. We mingled and spoke with other tables, were taught traditional drink combinations (one in particular with Nuts and Laban) and generally left with a full but thankful feeling in the pits of our stomachs. The food is of a particularly high quality and the variety between traditional and international dishes is more than enough to satisfy all spectrums of food tastes within your group.

With Ramadan being the month of group celebration and giving, Towers Rotana are also offering special booking offers for every booking of 6 people, 1 person will dine for free and for every booking of 10 people, 2 people will dine for free.

They also plan to continue their famous theme nights after Iftar, being served Tuesdays to Fridays from 9pm till 11.30pm and an International Buffet will be served Saturdays to Mondays from 9pm till 11.30pm.

From the Azan call to 8.30pm, throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, enjoy a bountiful Iftar buffet at Flavours on Two.
